Fundamentals of SQL for Testers

More businesses have now changed to agile development, which increases the need for technical skills of testers. SQL is one way to achieve this.

Learning objectives

You will gain basic knowledge of SQL and relational databases, as well as the following other benefits:

  • You know what a relational database is and how it is constructed
  • You can use SQL to check and modify the contents of a database
  • Training in SQL in various testing situations
  • You know the terms and techniques used by developers and data architects
  • Help with preparing test data
  • Help with migrations and conversions
  • Help with database updates
  • Use SQL to extract data for reports in test management tools
  • Understand how data typically presented in a GUI is stored

Target audience

You are a software tester with at least one year of practical experience, and you are familiar with common testing concepts (corresponding to the ISTQB Foundation level). This course is particularly suited to testers working in an agile set-up who wish to contribute to solving more technically oriented problems. You are not expected to have any prior knowledge of database construction or SQL.

Course format

This course is based on active participant involvement, with lots of exercises and direct practice with SQL statements in an application/database. TestHuset will provide a PC for use during the course.

Meet our Trainers

Christian Schmidt Petersen

Meet Christian Schmidt Petersen, TestHusets Trainer. Christian holds a degree in IT Engineering and has experience in both front-end and back-end development. He specializes in test automation and data-driven testing and has worked extensively with technical testing and test management across a number of large-scale software projects. Christian is ISTQB certified and has solid experience leading technical testing teams. As an instructor, he is dedicated to making technical topics understandable and applicable, with a strong focus on practical insight, diverse learning styles, and a solid professional foundation. His teaching is based on genuine understanding rather than theory alone and equips participants to translate learning into real-world practice.

Enzo Lycke Henriksen

Meet Enzo Lycke Henriksen, TestHusets Trainer. Enzo Henriksen has worked in IT for more than 30 years across industries in both Denmark and abroad. Since 2000, he has specialized in quality assurance, testing, and agile transformation, with experience spanning requirements management, test automation, test management, and DevOps. As part of TestHuset’s international expansion in Spain, Enzo contributes his expertise to strengthening testing and quality assurance processes globally. He is certified as an ISTQB Advanced Test Manager and Agile Tester and has deep knowledge of agile methods such as Scrum, SAFe, and Kanban. At TestHuset, Enzo teaches test management, testing in agile projects, and ISTQB Foundation.

Jens Riggelsen

Meet Jens Riggelsen, TestHusets Trainer. Jens is trained as a computer scientist and has experience as a dynamic developer, and is an expert in test automation. Jens holds several certifications in software testing, including ISTQB Foundation, Agile Extension, Advanced Test Automation Engineer, and Selenium, which gives him an advantage in bridging the gap between the development and testing worlds. With a background as an instructor at the Science Museums in Aarhus, Jens has accumulated over 2,000 hours of experience as an instructor and communicator of complex topics.
